What do you consider to be the most over-hyped D/Hr fic? Not that it's bad, but just that everyone loves it and while it's ok you don't get the hysteria.
For me, that would be the Draco Trilogy. Like, I read the first part, and never read the second and third because I just didn't understand why people loved it. Like, people talk about it all the time like it's the be all/end all of D/Hr fics when I really have to disagree. Before I would ever recommend that fic to anyone, I never would, I would have to go with "Their Room" by aleximoon, "We'll Always Have Paris" by Melissa D, "Dowry of a Single Galleon" and "How to Fall In Love In A Day" by bunney, or "Dragon's Bride" by rizzle! And I can give the reason for each one of those...in fact, I think I will.
FAVORITE FICS!!
"Their Room" by aleximoon - I read this years ago and I pick it up to read every year. To me, the relationship, or budding friendship, between Draco and Hermione is slow going and frustrating. For every step they take forward, they take three back. The two of them in those positions, I believe, would act the exact way they do. I think the emotions involved are raw and real. It's still one of my favroties.
"We'll Always Have Paris" by Melissa D - such a great fic! I mean, down to the details (and I'm usually not big on details) it is very powerful. I liked them actually having a relationship that everyone knows about and both of them suffering the consequences of it. I think her Draco might have wandered off the path of being the real Draco because he was far too sappy at times, but over-all, I love this.
"Dowry" by bunney - It's such a tease! Like, for 19 chapters, you're waiting for their relationship to finally be consummated. But that's such a background part of it. There are such depths to these characters. Draco's constant need for reassurance of not only his importance in the lives of his parents but in Hermione's love for him. I think it hits home to the fact that some guys equate a woman's love with what she's willing to give him in bed. I think their wedding night was the ultimate for Draco because he finally understood that, yes, she did love him. And Hermione plays just the right amount of fear and excitment about the world of sex, a world in which she knows nothing about. Oh, and there's the background of Lucius/Narcissa. I love reading that pairing done well.
"How To Fall In Love In A Day" by bunney - I like the fluffy part of it. I usually like a little bit of angst with my fluff because it seems kind of flat without it, but this totally worked. From them just enjoying the day together to Christmas morning, it's just a great little fic. It's not very long, but it's well worth the read.
"The Dragon's Bride" by rizzle - now, I hate to say this, and it in no way deminishes my love for the fics mentioned before, but this is my favorite. Ever. It tends to combine all of the wonderful qualities of the previous fics I mentioned. Probably because it has like fifty chapters, but that's besides the point. Like "Their Room" every step Draco and Hermione take forward, they take like...six back. It doesn't have an over abundance of details, which I appreciate because I don't want to sift through six paragraphs of how a room looks, but it gives you enough to put you in the room. It shows that they, Draco and Hermione, both have their vulnerable points and that they each know how to push them. Draco, in his inability to cope with his feelings for Hermione, and Hermione with her ability to just accept it as it is, puts their at odds, but also brings them together. And the end...the end is just fabulous. Rizz really makes you wait and work for the happily ever after. There are a million different nuances that make this fic so spectacular! I mean, when you read a fic and remember phrases from it, that's powerful stuff.
Anyway, I'm done gushing!
