Greed: The Double Edge Sword of Capitalism
The good:
If you're looking at it from a Capitalistic point of view, it's good that people are greedy in a way. Greedy or envious. I'm unsure which one really applies here. But both drive consumers. Look at it from a consumer point of view. Say you see a fantastic bag made by Brighton (my favorite but very expensive) and you really want it. So, even if you have to scrimp and save you eventually buy the bag which puts money into the economy and it helps it to flourish (at least the bag industry).
The bad:
The same theory can be applied here. Said bag is, as I said, expensive, and you're only making minimum wage, you have a car payment, three credit cards that are maxed out and behind, all in pursuit of having the newest and best thing. Next thing you know, people stop buying things because they simply can't afford it anymore and someone mentions the words recession, before we're actually in one, and next thing you know you have the worst summer on the books in like 8 years as far as Wall Street is concerned. Next thing you know, you're house is in forclosure, your car is being repossessed and you're filing for bankruptcy because you owe more money than you make in a year.
The solution:
I don't think either candidate has the right idea on this one. The idea is to stimulate the economy. You can't tax people that are already broke to give the government more money. Either way you look at it, the people on Capitol Hill still get paid. It's every John, Harry, and Sally that's struggling to put food on the table. Raising taxes isn't the solution in an already threadbare market. Neither is lowering taxes. I think the solution goes somewhere along where Huckabee was talking about when he was mentioning doing away with the IRS.
There is no sales tax. Instead, the tax is theoretically figured into the cost of whatever it is you're purchasing. At the end of the month, you're given a check that reimburses you for your tax expenditure. I think that's right. I read a book on it about two years ago and I'm fuzzy on the details. But I did remember that at the end of every month you would recieve a check. It would do away with the income tax, sales tax, death tax(which is freaking STUPID -- why is there a DEATH TAX? They're charging you for dying!!), and most other areas where they charge taxes. I don't believe in taking money from the rich and giving to the poor. I don't believe in equal division of money.
This isn't a socialistic country and I don't believe it could survive if it was one.
Instead, give monatary incentives for coming up with another fuel source. Give monatary incentives for people inventing things that make our lives easier. Put limits on time we give someone welfare. If you've been unemployed for 2 years and you've been on welfare all that time and you claim you can't find a job, McDonalds is always hiring. It's more than you're currently making and you would be stimulating the economy by not taking money from the government. If you're disabled, fine, but for those that sit on their asses and expect the government to take care of them, there need to be regulations. This is not a country of EQUAL OUTCOME but EQUAL OPPORTUNITY. If you don't know/have a skill, there are plenty of places that will hire you. Wal-mart. Some people complain about them, but my brother works there, makes decent money, and has health insurance for him and his baby. You do what you have to do to provide for your family.
It's time for people to stop making excuses for the bad decisions they made. You make minimum wage and have 4 kids, two in college. You know damn well that you can't afford a $250,000 house. Don't try to live above your means! Do what you can! When you try to live outside your means, you have Congress talking about a $700,000,000,000 bail out. Where do you think they're going to get the money? Not from you who is sitting there collecting a check from the government. No, they get it from me. I work my ass off and I end up paying for your lack of effort or will.
*sigh* I'm sure that went off topic a few times, but I did my best to try and maintain a logical thought there.
