Where were you on September 11, 2001? At work? At school? Did you cry? What did you feel? Were you angry? Were you afraid?
I was at school. I had a 9:00 class that morning so I went into the caf to grab breakfast with some other girls and they had TVs in there at the time. And when we walked in all the staff was standing around one of them. And as we got closer we saw that one of the buildings was on fire because a plane had slammed into it. They were calling it a freak accident. While we're standing there watching it burn, we saw the other plane come into view and fly around the first tower to go straight into the second. And silence reigned. I think I started crying. I'm not really sure. I don't really remember doing anything until they announced that the Pentagon had been hit. At that point, I ran back to my dorm room to call my mother and cry to her, only I couldn't find her. One of my friends had been running up and down the hall to find someone to talk to, so she came into my room and we just watched. Not long after that, both towers collapsed.
I was all of the above. I was afraid and angry. And people ask me how it is that I can sit there and support our troops and support what we're doing in Iraq and I think back on that day and think how can I not? And it's easy to forget what with all the political fighting just how that event united us. Members of the House and Senate stood together in front of the capital building, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and sang God Bless America. Jon Stewart even had a ringing endorsement for his home state of New York and vowed that America would not stand for such an act. SNL came back with a soft tribute to those who had fallen and told everyone it was okay to laugh again. The U.S. was on stand-by, but neighbor loved neighbor. That event, while horrible and catastrophic brought us together as Americans. Yes, we have our differences, but push comes to shove, I've learned one thing. We can fight with each other all we want, but you bring the fight to us and we'll show you what we can really do when united.
