A/N: This is just a little drabble I found the other day and finished.

Lucius sat in his study, sipping at his brandy. He hadn’t left it since his son had informed them of his recent elopement with Hermione Granger, which negated the contract that the Malfoy’s had with the Greengrass family. Draco was supposed to have married Astoria and brought the two families together. Instead, his son had betrayed the family and had taken up with the best friend of Harry Potter. It wasn’t enough that he’d done such a thing in the first place, to marry behind their backs, but to the mudblood friend of Potter…it made his skin crawl.

Draco didn’t even seem all that surprised by his father’s reaction. In fact, he seemed to expect something much worse than him simply getting up to leave. Lucius wasn’t even sure if his son was still there, and he had no desire to find out. He had yet to send the letter to the Greengrass’ to inform them of Draco’s indiscretion. He was still trying to figure out how he was going to break him up with the muggleborn and marry him off to Astoria without his knowledge. There were just so many different avenues to go down. He was furious with Draco. He wasn’t unsympathetic with Draco. He could see that he had a great affection for the Granger girl, but this went beyond his feelings. This was about restoring the Malfoy name, and a large, lavish society wedding to Astoria would have put them in the right direction.

She door to his office opened and Narcissa entered and sighed at seeing him drinking, and before noon, no less. She moved to sit in one of the large chairs in front of him and tilted her head at her husband. “Enough, Lucius.”

He looked down into his glass. “I haven’t done anything.”

She sighed. “You’re wallowing. What’s done is done.”

He shook his head. “I beg to differ. We can annul his marriage to the Granger girl…”

“Draco would never agree to that,” she said and Lucius frowned at her.

“You think I would give him a choice?”

She stiffened then and stood. “You most certainly will. We’re better than this. We are not going to force our son to marry someone against his will and we’re certainly not going to make him abandon his marriage. He will always have a choice.”

He looked at her then and sighed. “We didn’t.”

She tilted her head. “And how many times over the last few years have we both regretted that?” She clenched her jaw. “If you go after Draco about this, I’ll leave you.”

His eyes locked with hers and he glared at her. “Don’t threaten me,” he said lowly.

She folded her arms over her chest and shook her head. “It’s not a threat. I’ve put up with a great many things over the years. Your loyalty to the Dark Lord, your task for the Prophecy, Draco nearly going crazy with his own task, and then our imprisonment in our own home, but make no mistake that if you go after Draco or Hermione about this marriage, if you make them end it because of some silly contract, then I’ll walk away and you’ll never see me again.”

He slumped in his chair and felt the fingers of defeat lacing over his person. He knew that one thing was certain. He couldn’t live without her. In his darkest time, where he feared for the lives of his family, Narcissa was strong and did what she had to do for the love of him and their son. Draco was always her number one priority, and if she was willing to leave him over it he really didn’t see a way around it. Although, he could always keep a straight face to the girl while plotting her demise behind her back, but his wife’s voice cut through his thoughts.

“If something were to happen to the girl, Lucius, I would turn you in. I wouldn’t even need proof, as most of our world would believe me without a bit of hesitation. You will not do anything to harm my son. So, it’s your choice. Either I’m important to you, or your foolish dogma. Make your choice,” she said as she turned and left his study.

It was hours before Lucius emerged again, as it was now dark outside. The clock in the hall said that it was approaching midnight, which only made Lucius tired. He’d tried every scenario he could think of. Every possible option and each one left him with being alone or in prison. He’d finally given up and sent an owl with the missive to his lawyer and the Greengrass family. He knew that Sebastian would be furious about the ending of the betrothal, but his hands truly were tied.

As he entered his bedroom, he found Narcissa on her side of the bed and the duvet pulled over her as she slept. He dressed in his pyjamas and slipped into the bed beside her. He leaned up on his arm facing her and ran his fingers through her golden hair. He heaved a sigh and lay on his back as Narcissa squirmed and rolled to face him. She looked at him with bleary eyes. “What time is it?”

“Near midnight,” he said as he watched her move towards him and curled against his side.

“What have you been doing all this time?”

“Thinking,” was his quiet reply.

“Anything in particular?” she said softly.

He was quiet for a moment as he moved his hand along her spine. “How lonely I would be without you.”

She lifted her head to look at him. “What does that mean?”

He sighed. “It means that I sent a letter to our lawyer and the Greengrass family informing them that our contract is cancelled.”

Narcissa smiled slowly. “Did you?”

He nodded as she leaned forward and placed her lips against his. “I can’t be parted from you again, my love,” he said softly.

She moved her leg over his hips and straddled his waist. “I was hoping that you would choose me,” she said into his neck.

He frowned. “Too often I picked other things over you and my son. I’m done. I’m far too tired to be devious and evil any longer.”

She sat back and tilted her head at him. “You mean you aren’t going to be a little devious?”

He raised an eyebrow at her. “What do you mean by that, my dear?”

“Well, I don’t mind you being naughty as long as it begins and ends in here.”

He smiled slowly. “Is that so?”

“It’s always been so, Lucius. You just forgot,” she said as she tugged her nightgown over her head, leaving her naked on top of him.

He captured her face in his hands and brought her lips against his. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I’ll try to remember from now on,” he said as he nipped at her lips.

Narcissa moaned as his hands cupped her breasts and she settled against the erection tenting his pyjamas. “See that you do.”
