She stared at the document in front of her, more than surprised by its appearance. She knew they had been drifting apart since the loss of his family’s fortune, but she didn’t think he would go so far as to end their marriage. She looked up at him, a slight tilt to her head. “What is this?”

“It’s your way out,” he said, matter-of-factly.

She furrowed her brow as she lifted the divorce document and then back at him. “What am I supposed to do with this?”

“Sign it.”

She frowned. “Why?”

He sighed and sat in the chair facing her. “Because…neither of us is happy anymore.”

She shook her head and placed it back on the table. “I’m not signing it. I don’t want a divorce.”

He shook his head and furrowed his brow. “But, I thought you wanted out. I thought…why would you want to stay married to me? I’m a miserable person, Hermione.”

Her expression softened. “If I felt that way about you I never would have married you in the first place. I know our marriage has hit a rough patch, but don’t all marriages at one point. The purpose, though, is to work through it together.”

“I don’t know how to do that,” he admitted.

She smiled. “We try together. You love me. You don’t really want to let me go,” she said softly.

“Why is it always you who has to say that I love you?"

She took the parchment and ripped it up. “Now, what’s this really about?”

He frowned. “I can’t give you the life you deserve.”

“So, you think divorcing me will make it better?” She shook her head. “I have no intention of going anywhere, despite what you may think. I’m committed to this relationship, and I thought you were as well.”

He nodded. “I am. I was...I was trying to do right by you.”

“Stop. Being self-less doesn’t fit you. I like my Draco selfish and capable of taking what he wants, damn the consequences.”

He gave her a slight smile. “I was trying to do the right thing for once in my life.”

She moved out of her chair to perch herself on his lap. “Darling, if I wanted someone who did the right thing I would be with Harry or Ron. I don’t want that. I want you. I love you. Flaws and all. I find the complexity of your character rather intoxicating,” she said as she leaned down to kiss him.

He shook his head. “You’re a complicated woman.”

She smiled and nodded. “It’s just one more reason why you love me.”
