Went out front this evening and nearly had a heart attack. Sam, my big yellow idiot, was on his side in the middle of the STREET. Before I could take another step, he stretched and rolled and looked me right in the eye before turning to his other side.

The bastard was asleep in the street.

Brought his fuzzy ass RIGHT in the house and made him stay in even though it was way before sundown. Give me a fright, get stuck indoors. HMPH!

7/10
Excellent character voice, great worldbuilding. Some fairly matter-of-fact animal death, one scene a little too gruesome for some readers. (The cat is never harmed.) Point off for dissatisfying ending.

7/10
Retelling of Scarlet Letter set in near-future evangelical society. Interesting premise - criminals color-coded according to act, and of course, the usual ick factor of being convicted of murder for an abortion. Don't remember Scarlet Letter enough to judge how close/far it was, but decent story. Not pleased with a couple of MC's decisions regarding her lover, but mostly worth reading once.

8/10
Plagues through history! Almost automatically a win for me, and this was written in my favorite NF style - slightly sarcastic. Sometimes a little TOO much, but not at an annoying level. Nice and engaging, lots of details. Illustrations could have been bigger.

Protag just ... snarky teen girl with chip on shoulder. Not for me.

Couldn't read this and take it seriously. Detective's name was Ray Stevens, and I kept hearing Mississippi Squirrel Revival every time I saw his name.

Not in the mood for "urban paranoia". Writing fine, character not objectionable in first chapters, but just not for me.
